Production Design
Jonathan Paul Green was Production Designer on Criminal: UK, the Netflix police interrogation drama, directed by long-time collaborator Jim Field Smith.
The production was conceived as one large, interconnected set, incorporating the interrogation room, observation and control areas, corridors and surrounding police spaces. With the drama relying heavily on dialogue and performance, the design needed to provide a strong and believable visual world while giving Jim, the cast and camera team the flexibility to move between the different spaces.
An LED volume was integrated into the design to provide the exterior views, allowing the world beyond the set to remain controlled while maintaining the sense that the characters were within a much larger working police building.
The challenge was to make a deliberately contained environment visually interesting across the series, using architecture, materials, lighting and carefully considered sightlines to create depth and variation while retaining the claustrophobic atmosphere central to the drama.
