The Trouble With Maggie Cole
Production Design
Jonathan Paul Green was Production Designer on The Trouble with Maggie Cole, the ITV comedy-drama starring Dawn French, for Genial Productions, set in a close-knit coastal community in Devon.
Filmed extensively on location in Devon and Cornwall, and working closely with Director Ben Gregor, the production design was rooted in the character and atmosphere of the local landscape and architecture. A number of the interior sets were built inside existing farm buildings, effectively turning agricultural spaces into temporary studio environments and giving us the control of a constructed set while remaining close to the principal locations.
The challenge was to ensure that these purpose-built interiors connected seamlessly with the exterior locations and felt entirely part of the same world. Sets, locations, dressing and detail were developed together to create a warm, lived-in environment that reflected the personalities of the characters and the distinctive character of the fictional community.
The result was a combination of location work and constructed interiors designed to feel natural, cohesive and firmly rooted in Devon and Cornwall.
